2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “MY BOYFRIEND DOES NOT KNOW” | Gypsy & Bryan Plan a Secret Visit | 07/06/2018

On July 6, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard has a revealing conversation with Bryan Golden about her relationship with Ken Urker, her fear of cheating, and a possible visit that Ken doesn't know about. The conversation begins casually as Gypsy and Bryan discuss pictures, letters, the Fourth of July, and the extreme summer heat. Gypsy explains that she's preparing to work visitation, has completed her three mandatory classes, and is frustrated by delays in receiving tablets that would make communicating with people easier. She also admits she's struggling to keep up with correspondence. One woman recently wrote to tell Gypsy she was giving up on their friendship because Gypsy rarely responded. But the conversation takes a more personal turn when Gypsy begins discussing Ken. Gypsy admits she's a codependent person who struggles with being alone. She explains that her happiness often depends on someone else and that the distance between her and Ken has been affecting her emotionally. She tells Bryan about repeatedly calling Ken one evening and becoming upset when he didn't answer. When Ken finally answered, his explanation about being in a car left Gypsy with even more questions. Gypsy says she became so frustrated that she wrote Ken a lengthy letter explaining why she was angry. She also expresses disappointment over Ken repeatedly postponing his planned move from Seattle to Missouri. According to Gypsy, she doesn't need expensive promises or constant visits. She wants honesty, communication, and reassurance. Then Gypsy admits something surprising. “I'm afraid to cheat.” She explains that she considers herself faithful but sometimes feels so lonely that she craves attention from someone else. Bryan questions whether another relationship would actually solve her loneliness or whether the excitement of someone new would eventually wear off. Gypsy also reveals a deeply personal moment from Ken's recent visit. Ken asked whether her teeth were fake, something Gypsy says is one of her greatest insecurities. Although she was frightened to answer, she told him the truth, and Ken reassured her that it didn't change how he felt. Gypsy says the experience brought them closer, especially because Ken had also opened up about painful experiences from his past. Later, the conversation turns to Bryan potentially visiting Gypsy. They discuss visitation approval, traveling from Massachusetts, special visits, and the possibility of arranging a three-day visit in August. But there's one important detail. Gypsy tells Bryan that Ken doesn't know he's planning to visit her. She explains that she's concerned Ken would question why another man wanted to travel so far to see his girlfriend. The two joke about visitation rules, physical contact, and what might happen if Ken learned about the plans. Near the end, Gypsy tells Bryan she's had dreams about him, and the conversation becomes flirtatious as they discuss photographs Bryan recently sent her. Was Gypsy simply struggling with loneliness, or was she already questioning the boundaries of her relationship with Ken? Listen to the July 6, 2018 conversation and decide for yourself.
