This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Call 1: Kristy & Gypsy This one is only a few minutes. Gypsy tells Kristy that she finally spoke to Susie the previous night and that Susie is doing well, working two jobs and planning to send Gypsy pictures. Susie may also give Kristy her address so Kristy can pass it along to Gypsy. Gypsy also reminds Kristy to have the doctor's note she'll need for the upcoming visit. Kristy says she's already had it for a long time. That's basically the entire first call. Call 2: Ken & Gypsy This one has much more. Ken initially pranks Gypsy by saying he's not doing well before immediately admitting he's kidding. Then he gives her the news: “I officially have my trip booked.” “I will be there 100 percent.” Gypsy completely lights up: “Oh my God!” “I'm so excited!” She realizes they're now less than a month away from seeing each other. Food visits are back, but only 2 a year Gypsy has learned she's apparently only allowed two food visits per year, so she starts reconsidering her McDonald's plan. Instead of using one of the limited visits just for fries, she suggests waiting until Ken gets settled and having him cook something for her so they can make the visit count. Ken still promises: French fries and popcorn shrimp. 😂 They decide they'll bring enough food for both of them to eat together. Ken is worried about meeting Rod This is probably the best section. Ken has booked the trip without waiting for Kristy and Rod to finalize their plans because airfare would become more expensive. But that creates a problem. If Kristy and Rod visit the same weekend, how will everyone divide the visitation time? Ken makes it clear he's willing to visit with Gypsy's family, but he's nervous because: “Especially your dad, your dad doesn't know me at all.” Ken points out that he's never even spoken to Rod. Gypsy comes up with a plan. Friday could be the special visit, with everyone together. Saturday could be Gypsy alone with her family. And Gypsy makes one thing very clear about Sunday: “For the Sunday I want it to just be you and me.” That's actually a great quote too. “I’m so fucking nervous.” When they start imagining Ken meeting Rod, Ken admits: “I'm so fucking nervous, Gypsy.” “I'm so nervous to meet him.” Gypsy repeatedly assures him: “It's gonna be fine.” Then they start joking about exactly how Ken should shake Rod's hand. Ken: “It's gotta be a grip. I gotta grip that guy's hand.” 😂 Gypsy even says Ken's impression of Rod is surprisingly good. That whole section would make a great Short. Ken dreams Gypsy leaves him Ken admits he had a dream where Gypsy called him and broke up with him. Then, in the dream, he sees in the newspaper that: “She has a new boyfriend.” Gypsy immediately assures him: “Hell no. No, that ain't gonna happen.” It's another example of the insecurity we've seen from both of them throughout these calls. Gypsy STILL hasn't written Erik Menendez Remember the 05/04 call where Gypsy said she wanted to write Erik Menendez? We get an update here. Ken asks about her pen pals and Gypsy says: “I still haven't wrote Eric the letter.” So as of May 11, 2018, based on what she says here, she still had not sent that letter. Gypsy admits she used to steal from stores Her ICVC class has moved into robbery and theft. Gypsy jokes that this chapter actually applies to her: “I was a big thief with stores.” Ken makes her promise she won't do it again after she's released. Gypsy responds: “I won't steal a fucking pack of gum ever again.” That's another excellent Short. They discuss Gypsy's life after release This is probably the most substantive part of the call beyond the trip. Ken asks what happens if Gypsy is paroled but isn't allowed to immediately return to Louisiana and has to remain in Missouri. Gypsy talks about programs that might help formerly incarcerated women find employment and reintegrate into society. She expects a parole officer will encourage her to work and admits: “It's gonna be rough for the first couple of months.” But she's already thinking financially. Gypsy says she has a mandatory savings account and wants to start putting aside at least $20 every month. She calculates that by the time she's released, she could potentially have: “like $6,000-something dollars.” She wants that money to provide a cushion for her transition back into society. Ken reassures her: “You're not gonna be on your own.” That's actually a really interesting glimpse into how they were imagining their future at this point. “Nothing can get in the way of that.” Toward the end, Ken comes back to the June visit. He tells Gypsy that this time she has something definite to look forward to: “You know that I'm gonna be there.” “Nothing can get in the way of that.” And again: “I can't fucking wait.” Gypsy also reassures Ken about Rod: “He's chill now. Like, he doesn't hate you.” Ken says he's still nervous but knows he's eventually going to have to meet him
