2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “I’D TESTIFY FOR THE DEFENSE” | Gypsy Changes Her Position on Nick Godejohn | 06/25/2018

In this June 25, 2018 conversation, Gypsy Rose Blanchard speaks with Jenner Smith of ABC News/20/20 for an extensive update on her life, Nicholas Godejohn's upcoming trial, her changing feelings toward Nick, taking accountability for her own actions, and what she hopes to do in the future. Gypsy begins by discussing everyday life, including working out, school, and her progress toward earning her GED. She explains that she's trying to become more productive and has been working to improve her math score so she can move on to the next stage of testing. The conversation shifts when Jenner explains that Discovery ID and OWN license 20/20 episodes and that an updated ending could be added to the original program. Jenner asks Gypsy what's changed since her previous interview and whether she wants to comment on Nick's upcoming trial. Gypsy reveals that her feelings toward Nicholas Godejohn have changed significantly. She says she has let go of much of the anger and resentment she previously felt toward him and admits that she believes she had been projecting some of her own anger toward herself onto Nick. Gypsy says she is now sorry for getting Nick involved and explains that she has come to forgive him. When the possibility of testifying comes up, Gypsy says she would rather testify for Nick's defense than against him. She also reveals that Nick's attorney had previously requested her deposition before his trial was postponed. Jenner asks what Gypsy hopes will ultimately happen to Nick. Gypsy says she previously believed he should receive life without parole, but her opinion has changed. She now says she believes 15 to 20 years would be fair, comparing that with the 10-year sentence she received and acknowledging her role in asking Nick and developing the plan. The conversation becomes even more revealing when Gypsy discusses the Impact of Crime on Victims class she recently completed. Gypsy says the class forced her to examine her own responsibility differently. She identifies Dee Dee as her primary victim and Nick as a secondary victim, explaining that she believes she victimized Nick by using him to carry out the crime. She also describes a symbolic drawing she created for the class involving Dee Dee, their pink house, a shattered picture frame representing the people affected by the crime, and her own hand holding a hammer with Nick's name written on it. Jenner also asks about Gypsy's future. Gypsy says she remains interested in becoming an advocate and talks about potentially working in the beauty or salon industry after her release. Jenner then brings up the possibility of another on-camera interview later in the year. Gypsy says she's currently “interviewed out” and wants to be careful about what she says publicly with Nick's trial approaching. The conversation also turns to Ken Urker. Gypsy says she still cares about Nick, but no longer romantically because she's with Ken. She talks about Ken's recent three-day visit, how much their relationship has progressed, and even conversations about possibly getting married someday. Interestingly, when Jenner asks whether Gypsy wants her relationship with Ken included in the public update, Gypsy says she doesn't want that information going nationwide yet. Toward the end of the conversation, Jenner reads back the information she's gathered for the potential 20/20 update, including Gypsy's changed feelings toward Nick, her increased focus on accountability, her GED progress, and her plans for life after release. This conversation captures Gypsy giving 20/20 a very different perspective on Nicholas Godejohn and her own responsibility than the one she says she expressed during her earlier interview.
