2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “IT MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WASN’T IN PRISON” | Gypsy Reflects on Her Weekend With Ken | 06/14/2018

June 14, 2018. Days after Ken Urker's three-day visit with Gypsy Rose Blanchard, they're still talking about the weekend and already planning when they'll see each other again. This recording contains two calls between Gypsy and Ken, although the first is extremely short because Ken is busy at work. When they reconnect later that night, Ken tells Gypsy he wants his next visit to be a complete surprise. Instead of telling her when he's coming, he wants her to suddenly receive a visitation call and discover he's there. The conversation also reveals who is still on Gypsy's visitation list. Gypsy says she removed both Michelle Dean and Robert back in April. Gypsy then tells Ken that if he can't return for her birthday, they may be able to use the new video-visitation system and save his next in-person visit for their anniversary. They also finally discuss the photographs taken during their weekend together. Gypsy admits she hates the way she looks in them, while Ken insists she looks great and says the photographs from their final visit are his favorites. But the most revealing moment comes when they reflect on what those three days together actually meant. Gypsy says spending approximately 24 hours with Ken made her feel like she was “on the outside” and “no longer in prison.” She describes the weekend as an escape before having to return to her normal prison life. And after everything that happened during the visit, including being warned about their behavior and eventually being reported, Ken jokes that they've probably done everything possible to get in trouble. This time, he promises he'll be a “good boy.” DISCLAIMER: This audio was obtained from the Missouri Department of Corrections through a Missouri Sunshine Law public-record request.
