2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

In this May 8, 2018 call, Gypsy immediately admits to Kristy that she couldn't keep the investigation into Ken secret. Her first words are: “I cracked.” “He got it out of me.” Kristy already knows something happened because Ken has texted her saying he needs to talk and that he just had “one of the most interesting conversations with Gypsy.” Gypsy explains that she told Ken she'd been emotionally stressed and eventually admitted that her roommate had made claims about him. She tells Kristy she didn't reveal that Dawn still had people investigating, only that Kristy had Googled the alleged blog and couldn't find anything. Her roommate had compared Ken to Nick This is a BIG part of this call. Gypsy reveals that the alleged blog wasn't the first time this roommate had gotten into her head about Ken. According to Gypsy, a couple weeks earlier the roommate accused her of manipulating Ken and compared the situation to Nick: “You manipulated Nick to come out of state to... kill your mom.” Then, according to Gypsy, the roommate claimed she was now manipulating Ken into crossing state lines and moving closer to her. Kristy doesn't buy it. She points to Ken sending Gypsy money, writing frequently and planning his move as evidence that she believes his feelings are genuine. “Just enough truth to make a doubt in my mind” This may be the strongest quote of the call. Gypsy realizes that some of what her roommate told her could be checked, such as Ken's Facebook profile, but says other information appeared to be added around it. Gypsy describes it perfectly: “She puts just enough truth to make a doubt in my mind, but adds her lies to the mix.” That line is excellent for a thumbnail. Kristy compares it to Dee Dee Kristy becomes increasingly angry and tells Gypsy she believes the roommates are trying to manipulate her: “They trying to manipulate you so bad like your mama did.” She tells Gypsy they think she's still “weak in the mind.” Gypsy responds: “I'm at least smart enough to call someone I trust... to double check this.” Earlier Kristy makes essentially the same comparison, saying they're “trying to do the same thing your mama did to you” by repeatedly planting doubts in her head. Gypsy decides to secretly play along This is another really interesting part. Gypsy says she's going to request a room change, but until she can get moved: “I'm not gonna let them know that I'm onto them.” She says she'll “play along” while privately believing what they're telling her isn't true. Her goal is to get moved somewhere she won't be: “mind fucked.”
