2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “I WRITE HER A NOTE... THEN RIP IT UP” | Gypsy Talks About Dee Dee’s Birthday | 04/18/2018

In this April 18, 2018 prison call, Gypsy Rose Blanchard talks with Kristy about her new prison job, an emotional encounter during picture day, Ken's upcoming move, Dee Dee's birthday, Mother's Day, and the complicated emotions she says she still experiences surrounding her mother's death. Gypsy starts by telling Kristy about her first truly busy day at her new job. Around 50 to 60 women showed up for pictures, and Gypsy was responsible for writing receipts and keeping track of photo orders. She admits she was so nervous that her hands were shaking, but says a staff member helped her rather than leaving her to handle everything alone. Then Gypsy describes an emotional experience from that day. A woman came to collect a photograph she had taken with her 18-year-old son during a visit. According to Gypsy, the woman's son had since been in a serious car accident and was on life support, making the prison photograph potentially the final picture they would have together. Gypsy says she sat beside the woman, looked at the picture with her and tried to comfort her. Kristy also says Sophie told her their documentary probably wouldn't be released until around October and that two copies would be provided so Gypsy could eventually have one. Later they discuss Ken's plans. Gypsy asks Kristy to tell Ken that she took new pictures and will be sending some to him. She also wants to know when she should stop sending mail to his current address because of his upcoming move. That's when Kristy mentions that Ken's May 3 job interview falls on Dee Dee's birthday. She says she pointed this out to Ken, who apparently hadn't realized the significance of the date. That leads into the strongest part of the call. Gypsy says Dee Dee's birthday isn't as difficult for her as the anniversary of her death. On Dee Dee's birthday, Gypsy says: “I will sometimes write her a note or make a card and then rip it up.” She explains that because she obviously can't send it anywhere, writing down what she wishes she could say helps her get through the day. But she says the anniversary of Dee Dee's death is different: “The day of her passing, that's whenever it all hits me super hard.” Gypsy also describes Mother's Day as both a good and sad holiday. She says it's painful because Dee Dee isn't there anymore, but it's also happy because she can wish Kristy a Happy Mother's Day. Then she tells Kristy: “You're my mom now.” Toward the end, Gypsy talks about her new job giving her more than just something to do. She says she had become a “homebody” and believes isolating herself in her room was beginning to recreate the isolated lifestyle she had when she lived with Dee Dee. She says the job is helping her get out, socialize and “come out of my shell.” Another VERY interesting angle There's a little detail that could easily get overlooked. Gypsy says when she talked about Kristy and Rod in prison, she referred to them as: “My mom and dad.” She remembers another woman looking at her strangely because, presumably, the woman knew Gypsy's story and was confused hearing Gypsy casually say her mom was coming to visit. That leads directly into Gypsy explaining that Kristy is now her mother figure. #GypsyRoseBlanchard #DeeDeeBlanchard #KristyBlanchard #PrisonCalls #TheBlanchardFiles
