2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

In this July 20, 2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard prison phone call with Ken Urker, Gypsy reaches an emotional breaking point over her family, her relationship with Rod and Kristy Blanchard, and the continuing media attention surrounding her case. At the beginning of the call, Gypsy tells Ken she is having a difficult time and simply “needed to hear your voice.” The conversation quickly turns to media projects. Ken says Kristy is trying to contact Michelle Dean in an attempt to stop her project, while Gypsy says she's just learned about additional interviews and potential projects involving Lifetime and another network. Gypsy is furious. She says she has repeatedly told her family that she wants to stop doing media and live a normal life, yet believes more projects continue to be pursued. Then she makes one of the biggest statements in the call: “I've been faking this whole fucking thing this whole fucking time.” Gypsy says she's been presenting an image of having a close relationship with her father when, according to her, they actually speak for approximately 15 minutes once a month. She also accuses Kristy of loving the attention and says she's tired of her name and reputation continuing to be connected to media projects. Later, Gypsy admits she's questioning whether she's genuinely rebuilding a relationship with her parents or simply telling everyone that she is. She contrasts the relationship with what she receives emotionally from Ken, pointing to things as simple as him remembering her birthday, sending cards, answering when she's upset and listening when she needs someone. Ken actually pushes back on some of Gypsy's conclusions. He tells her he believes her parents absolutely love her and encourages her to consider the limitations of their circumstances rather than assuming their behavior means she isn't important to them. Gypsy also admits feeling hurt when comparing what her sister Mia receives from their parents to what she receives. She specifically mentions Mia potentially receiving an expensive Michael Kors bag and wonders whether her parents really love her but are simply “shitty at showing it.” Ken encourages Gypsy to stop having surface-level conversations with Rod and directly tell her father that she wants a deeper relationship with him. But the media remains Gypsy's biggest frustration. Gypsy explains that when new programs air, other inmates see them, which she says leads to her being teased, singled out and accused of wanting attention. She says every new project makes serving her sentence harder and forces her to relive everything she's trying to leave behind. She specifically recalls Kristy's previous attitude that there is “no such thing as bad publicity” and that even negative publicity could help a television project. Gypsy strongly disagrees: “That's not how I feel.” Then comes arguably the biggest decision of the call. Gypsy says the situation has changed how she sees her future. She loves Rod and Kristy, but says returning to Louisiana is not in her best interest if she wants a fresh start. Instead, she tells Ken: “It is not in my past. It is with my future, and that is with you.” And: “I'm coming home to you. I've made that decision today. That's my final decision.” This July 2018 call captures Gypsy questioning the public image she'd presented of her family relationships, struggling with continuing media attention, and making a major declaration about where she believed her future belonged. #GypsyRoseBlanchard #GypsyRose #KristyBlanchard #RodBlanchard #KenUrker #DeeDeeBlanchard #GypsyRosePrisonCalls #PrisonPhoneCalls #PrisonCalls #TheAct #TrueCrime #TrueCrimeCommunity #TrueCrimeYouTube #FOIA #TheBlanchardFiles
