2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “THEY JUST WANT TO MAKE YOU MISERABLE” | Kristy Investigates the Claims About Ken | 05/06/2018

In this May 6, 2018 call, Kristy gives Gypsy an update after she and Dawn spent hours trying to investigate the claims Gypsy's roommates had made about Ken. The previous day, Gypsy was questioning everything after being told that Ken allegedly had a blog discussing their private conversations and might be using his relationship with her because he wanted to pursue journalism. Now Kristy tells her: “Me and Dawn looked into that stuff we talked about... can't find shit.” Kristy says they searched Ken's full name and the alleged name of the blog but couldn't find it. She tells Gypsy they believe the people feeding her the information may simply be trying to make her miserable. Gypsy admits the accusations had been “turning my world upside down.” She says her heart didn't believe the allegations, but because of everything she'd been through, “that little doubt was planted in there.” Kristy says they're still investigating, but at that point: “We couldn't find nothing yesterday. Not nothing.” They couldn't even locate the alleged blog by the name Gypsy had been given. Gypsy ultimately decides that if Ken wants to tell her more about his past, she'll let him do it himself rather than confronting him with information other people dug up. By the end of the call, Gypsy thanks Kristy for investigating: “My mind is now at ease.” The mystery cookies continue The strange package from the previous call also comes up again. Kristy says she and Dawn spent about two hours talking and investigating. They still couldn't find the sender on social media, and Kristy says the address associated with the person online appeared different from the address included with the package. Everyone is apparently telling Kristy: “Don't eat them. Don't eat them.” Kristy agrees she isn't going to risk eating the homemade cookies. There's actually a wild Dee Dee line during this conversation. When someone suggests the cookies could be harmless, Kristy responds: “Yeah, we all thought DD was harmless and look how that turned out.” That could make a great secondary thumbnail element. Gypsy compares herself to the Turpin children Gypsy and Kristy discuss the Turpin family after seeing television coverage. Gypsy says seeing what those children allegedly endured gave her perspective: “When you think that your life is the hardest thing that anyone's ever had to go through, you see somebody else that had it worse off.” She then says: “I truly believe that those kids had it worse off.” And explains that at least there were periods in her own childhood that she remembers as good. That's a noteworthy section given how Gypsy was publicly describing her own childhood around this period. New prison tablets Gypsy finally gets to physically handle one of the new tablets. She describes it as transparent and says it will apparently allow pictures, video messages, cards, emails, a digital calendar, games and movies purchased through JPay. Interestingly, that leads into the documentary. Kristy says people still ask whether Gypsy is going to watch it, and Kristy tells them: “As of now, no she's not.”
