2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “WHAT IS IT WITH YOU & BREAKING THE RULES?!” | Ken Tells Gypsy About His WILD July 4th | 07/05/2018

On July 5, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard calls Ken Urker the day after the Fourth of July, and Ken has quite the story to tell her. Ken admits his Fourth of July celebration got a little out of control and says the experience actually made him realize that he needed to calm down. It starts when Ken arrives at an event with friends and discovers outside alcohol isn't allowed. Instead of leaving it behind, Ken says he hid beer and hard cider in his bag, covered it with his hoodie and walked straight past the bag-check area without stopping. Ken later says he learned that getting caught could have potentially landed him in serious trouble. But that was only the beginning. When Ken encounters an enormous bathroom line, he says he simply walks to the front and goes inside. His friends are becoming increasingly frustrated and telling him to stop breaking the rules. Then Ken notices an unlocked gate leading into an area people aren't normally allowed to enter. So naturally, he goes inside. Gypsy finally asks: “What is wrong with you?” Ken admits he doesn't know. Later, Ken and his friend wait approximately 45 minutes in a food line before Ken gets impatient. Instead of continuing to wait, Ken says he walks over to the pickup area, claims he already ordered a burger and fries, and gets handed food he hadn't actually purchased. By this point, Ken admits: “I’m pretty drunk.” Then Ken needs to use the bathroom again. Rather than wait in another enormous line, he sneaks back through the restricted gate and tries to hide near a tree. That's when security spots him. According to Ken, a security guard shines a flashlight at him and tells him to come over. Ken does the exact opposite. He runs. Barefoot. Without his phone. And with absolutely no idea where his friends are among the enormous crowd. After Ken finally finishes telling the story, Gypsy has one question: “What is it with you and breaking the rules?” She jokes that Ken is exactly the kind of person who becomes even more interested in touching something the moment he's told not to touch it. The conversation later turns back to Gypsy's life. Gypsy tells Ken she's nervous because she'll be working visitation that weekend. Ken reassures her that she'll do fine. They also joke about the reputation Gypsy says she developed after Ken's previous visit. According to Gypsy: “I was the talk of the camp.” She says people were calling her a “floozy” and a “slut” because of what happened during visitation. Instead of getting upset, Gypsy and Ken turn it into a joke. Gypsy laughs about people seeing her coming and thinking: “Oh, here comes the slut.” Ken adds: “Hold on to your husband because the slut is here.” Near the end, they realize they haven't been getting enough time to talk lately. Ken says he wants a good three-hour conversation with Gypsy, and they begin working around their schedules to find more time together. They also discover they're both watching the same television show and decide they'll keep watching it so they can talk about it together. The call ends with another “I love you” and plans to talk again soon.
