2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

On July 9, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard makes three recorded calls from the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. The first and third calls are with Ken Urker, while the middle conversation is with Rachell Garlick. The first call with Ken is brief but begins with an interesting exchange. When Gypsy calls and identifies herself, Ken initially asks who's speaking. Gypsy jokes that it makes her wonder who else he's been talking to. She also asks whether he still has his second job. Ken says he doesn't and asks her to call back because he's busy. The second call, with Rachell Garlick, contains the most revealing conversation of the day. Rachell tells Gypsy she's visiting Texas with her family, and they catch up on their lives. Gypsy talks about reaching two years since the crime and explains that Ken's recent visit helped her through what might otherwise have been a difficult anniversary. Then Gypsy tells Rachell about a conversation she recently had with Sebastian. According to Gypsy, Sebastian commented on how attractive her younger sister looked in Facebook photographs and remarked that she appeared older than her actual age. Gypsy says she found the remarks uncomfortable because her sister was only 17 at the time. The conversation then turns to Gypsy's public image and the upcoming television miniseries about her case. Rachell reveals that she plans to list photographs on eBay after the miniseries is released. She anticipates that Gypsy's parents might be upset but says she intends to explain that Gypsy already knew about the arrangement. A particularly revealing statement: “The plan was totally for me to profit off of it.” Gypsy doesn't object during the exchange. Rachell explains that she hopes to use the money to purchase a house and achieve financial stability. Gypsy also reveals that her plans for life after prison have changed. Rather than immediately returning to live with her parents, she says Ken is planning to move to Missouri and that she expects to remain there with him until she's finished with parole. She says she hasn't discussed that decision with her parents yet. Rachell and Gypsy also discuss arranging a visit, Rachell's daughter, and their friendship. The third call returns to Ken. Gypsy apologizes for calling later than expected, and the two briefly exchange affectionate words. Ken says he wants to hear about what happened earlier, but Gypsy doesn't have time to explain. These three calls offer a look at Gypsy's relationships, her future plans with Ken, and the discussions taking place behind the scenes as interest in her case continued to grow. What do you think about the plan to sell photographs following the release of the miniseries?
