This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

In this April 17, 2018 prison call, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ken Urker have a lengthy conversation about their relationship, Ken's plans to move to Missouri, Gypsy's new prison job, the media attention surrounding her case, and how Gypsy says her previous experiences shaped the way she viewed sex and intimacy. Gypsy begins with some good news. She tells Ken she is officially done “scrubbing toilets” and has started her new job working with prison photographs. She describes having her own desk and swivel chair, helping with general population and drug-treatment photographs, creating photo backdrops, and doing what she calls “secretary work.” She says the new job is much better suited to her school schedule and gets her out of her room after becoming increasingly reclusive. But Gypsy then tells Ken she needs to explain something she wrote to him in a letter. She says her past relationships had led her to believe sex was what men primarily wanted from her. Because of that, Gypsy says she had “trained myself” to believe: “To keep a man happy I have to be kind of over sexual.” Gypsy apologizes for putting Ken into the same category. She tells him she can now see that he likes her for who she is and that sex isn't the most important part of their relationship. She also makes a revealing statement about how she previously understood intimacy: “For a long time I thought that sex was intimacy.” Gypsy says she didn't understand how couples could describe something as simple as hugging or holding one another as intimate because, in her mind, “it's not sex, so obviously it's not intimacy.” She says that changed when she finally got to physically touch and hold Ken during their visit. Ken tells her he never viewed her that way and says knowing they won't be able to have sex for a long time doesn't change his desire to be with her. He says his interest over the previous year had been in learning who Gypsy was “as a person, as a soul, as a human being.” Gypsy calls Ken the first “nice guy” she feels she's been with and describes him as “the marrying kind.” She contrasts that with what she says she experienced from other men. The conversation also gives us another major update on Ken's move to Missouri. Ken says Ameristar wants him to come in on May 3 and explains that getting a job lined up is the most important piece of his move. His plan is to initially stay with his father, buy a car, begin working, save money, and eventually get his own place in Liberty, putting him about an hour away from Gypsy. There's also a funny exchange when Ken tells Gypsy he's been talking to Kristy about the move. Gypsy jokingly calls Kristy “the other woman,” and Ken plays along, claiming his entire relationship with Gypsy has secretly been a year-long plan to get close to her mother. Later, Ken brings up the upcoming Investigation Discovery documentary “Gypsy's Revenge.” Both say they dislike the title. Gypsy repeats that she has shredded the articles she'd saved about herself and says she wants to step away from repeatedly reliving her story. This time she explains more about why. Gypsy says repeated media appearances can desensitize people to her story and make her appear “attention seeking.” “This was my life. This is not just a story. This was my life.” Ken agrees and encourages her to stop doing interviews and documentaries and focus on who she is now. Gypsy says she has to decide whether she wants to continue living in that period of her life or move forward and “be the Gypsy that I am now.” She also tells Ken she doesn't want him to feel like he's forever stuck being associated with “the girl that murdered her mom.” Ken tells her he doesn't view their relationship that way and doesn't care what the media or people on Facebook think. Toward the later portion of the call, they briefly discuss the clemency process and former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens. Gypsy says she's content with her situation at that moment, telling Ken: “For being in prison my life couldn't be better.” She points to her new job and Ken's upcoming move as reasons she's happy. Ken similarly describes feeling like his move to Missouri is where he's supposed to be. #GypsyRoseBlanchard #GypsyRose #KenUrker #PrisonCalls #TheBlanchardFiles #TrueCrime #PrisonAudio #GypsyAndKen #DeeDeeBlanchard #TrueCrimeCommunity #ChillicotheCorrectionalCenter #GypsysRevenge
