2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

On July 4, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard calls Sebastian for a lengthy conversation about life after incarceration, relationships, family problems, substance use and Sebastian's attempts to stay away from harder drugs. The call begins with the two wishing each other a Happy Fourth of July. Gypsy reveals that exactly one year earlier she had spent the Fourth of July in solitary confinement, watching fireworks through her window. Sebastian responds: “Well, I can say it’s much improved.” Their conversation then turns to Rachel and Gypsy's family. Sebastian says he saw pictures of Mia and calls her gorgeous, but also encourages Gypsy to tell Mia that she doesn't need a relationship to make her happy. That leads Gypsy and Sebastian into a discussion about Mia's recent breakup, cheating and their own past relationship. Sebastian explains that if someone immediately begins seeing someone else following a breakup, it can cause the former partner to wonder whether that person was already in the picture. Considering Gypsy and Sebastian's own history, it's an interesting observation. Sebastian also tells Gypsy that he's preparing to move into his own apartment and promises to give her his new mailing address. He talks about serving as best man at his brother Steven's wedding and promises to send Gypsy pictures of himself in his suit. But the conversation becomes much more serious when Sebastian gives Gypsy an update about his substance-use treatment. Sebastian admits that after his release he continued smoking marijuana and says he failed drug tests repeatedly for months. He says he eventually received a new parole officer and was reenrolled in treatment classes. Then Sebastian reveals that he's still smoking marijuana, despite knowing it could cause additional problems. He explains that the environment he returned to after incarceration made remaining completely sober extremely difficult. According to Sebastian, his mother was using meth and his younger brother had begun using it again as well. Sebastian says he turned to marijuana while trying to cope with the situation, but emphasizes that he has stayed away from meth, heroin and pills. He tells Gypsy: “I’ve come close a couple times, but I haven’t touched it and I don’t want to.” Gypsy tells Sebastian that she doesn't want him to relapse and says she's always wanted the best for him. Sebastian says moving into his own apartment will finally allow him to get away from the environment he's been living in. The conversation then becomes much lighter. Gypsy tells Sebastian she's worried because she's gained approximately six pounds. Sebastian jokes by asking if she's pregnant before reassuring her that gaining some weight isn't necessarily a bad thing. Gypsy explains that she's been exercising but jokes about the amount of butter she's been eating and her fear of gaining too much weight while incarcerated. Later, the conversation returns to Rachel when Gypsy tells Sebastian she still has shirtless photographs of him that Rachel sent her. Sebastian tries to figure out exactly which pictures she has, eventually remembering one that was taken shortly before he was incarcerated. He tells Gypsy that one of the photographs was taken shortly after he'd been involved in some of the activity that eventually got him into trouble. Gypsy responds by telling Sebastian that he looked sexy in the picture. The call ends with Sebastian making Fourth of July plans and Gypsy making sure he promises to finally write her the letter she's been waiting for. Sebastian promises he will.
