2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “I WANNA REKINDLE OUR FRIENDSHIP” | Gypsy Gets an Unexpected Email From Sophia | 07/04/2018

On July 4, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard calls Ken Urker while he's out with friends waiting for Fourth of July fireworks. The conversation starts casually, with Ken telling Gypsy that he's heading down to the lake but is worried rain might ruin the night's plans. Gypsy tells Ken about her Fourth of July meal, while Ken admits he has barely eaten anything all day. Gypsy immediately tells him he needs to find something to eat. Then Ken tells Gypsy: “I’ve just been thinking about you, though.” The two exchange “I love you” and tell each other how much they miss one another. But then Gypsy reveals she received an unexpected email from someone she hasn't heard from in months. Sophia. According to Gypsy, Sophia periodically disappears for months before unexpectedly contacting her again. This time, Gypsy says Sophia's email included an apology: “I miss you. I’m sorry that I was obsessed.” Gypsy says Sophia also told her: “I wanna rekindle our friendship.” Gypsy's answer is immediate: “No. Go away.” She tells Ken she no longer has Sophia's number and has absolutely no intention of calling her. Ken agrees that Gypsy should leave the situation alone: “Best just let that one die.” But Gypsy wonders whether Sophia will ever actually let it go. Gypsy jokes that she worries Sophia could continue following her life and potentially try to find her in person after her release. That leads to a dark joke between Gypsy and Ken about Sophia using a wheelchair and the two someday choosing an upstairs apartment. Even Gypsy tells Ken: “You’re horrible.” The short Fourth of July call ends when Ken has to return to his friends. Since Ken has the following day off, they make plans to have a longer conversation then. They exchange “I love you,” wish each other a Happy Fourth of July and say goodnight.
