2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “EVERY MONTH IT'S NEXT MONTH” | Gypsy Confronts Ken About His Missouri Move | 04/25/2018

In this April 25, 2018 call, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ken Urker discover they're having surprisingly similar problems at their new jobs, but the conversation quickly becomes much more serious when Gypsy admits something has been bothering her. Ken begins by venting about a terrible day at work. Gypsy tells him she's about a week into her own new job and can relate. She loves the work, but says her coworkers are fighting and trying to get her to pick sides. She's also now taking pictures instead of only doing paperwork. They also continue the photo conversation from Gypsy's earlier call with Kristy. Ken confirms he received the picture of Gypsy with the dog, and Gypsy explains that working in the photo department now gives her more control over writing on and sending her pictures. Then the tone changes. Gypsy asks Ken: “Do you think we talk enough?” Ken immediately says no. Gypsy explains that she wishes they could talk every day. Ken agrees and says he hates only getting their longer conversations about once a week. He says sometimes he'd be happy just hearing her voice for three minutes. That leads directly into Ken's planned move to Missouri. Gypsy admits she's been anticipating the move for around five months and says: “It seems like every... every month it's next month, next month.” Ken acknowledges that he keeps pushing the move back. He explains that he lost two jobs earlier that year and says the biggest issue now is having enough money to move without immediately finding himself financially unstable. He insists that moving closer to Gypsy is still his only goal. Interestingly, Gypsy then tells Ken: “Do not send me any more money.” She says she'd rather have him save that money for his plane ticket and moving expenses because what she can buy at the prison store isn't nearly as important to her as having him nearby. Ken pushes back, explaining that sending her money makes him feel better because he knows she's okay. Then Gypsy explains another reason the distance has been bothering her: “There are times that I get lonely.” She says that's why she brought up them not talking enough. She adds that instead of calling another guy, she's staying faithful to Ken and waiting until he's available. Then Gypsy pranks Ken This part is pretty funny. Ken starts worrying about other men writing Gypsy. Gypsy invents a man named “Mark from Michigan,” says he's 29, speaks French and claims she sent him a visitation form. Ken absolutely does not take it well. Gypsy eventually admits: “There is no Mark from Michigan. I totally made that shit up.” But Ken doesn't believe her at first because she provided so many details. He remains convinced that Mark might actually exist. Gypsy then gives him a real update about some of her correspondence. She says she wrote Sebastian several weeks earlier but hadn't heard back and hadn't spoken to him since February 7. She also says she still hadn't heard anything from Robert and that most other people had stopped writing her. “Should I come to Missouri?” Ken eventually asks Gypsy outright: “Should I come to Missouri?” Gypsy answers: “Yes... absolutely.” Ken admits that because they haven't been talking as much, he doesn't always know what's going on in Gypsy's head and wants reassurance that she still wants him to make such a major move. Gypsy makes it very clear that she does. Ken says that after waiting through his six-month visitation suspension and finally seeing Gypsy again, the visit only reassured him that she was the person he wanted to be with. He says he can't continue flying from Seattle to Missouri for occasional visits and needs to relocate. Her ICVC class gets interesting Near the end, Gypsy reveals that that day's Impact of Crime on Victims class was about domestic violence. As part of an exercise, she was told to write down the characteristics she wanted in a partner. Gypsy says she looked at her list and realized: “This describes you dead on.” She uses that to reassure Ken that there isn't anyone else who compares to him. They also discuss The Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks and its domestic-violence storyline. #GypsyRoseBlanchard #KenUrker #PrisonCalls #TrueCrime #TheBlanchardFiles
