This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

In this May 19, 2018 call, Gypsy and Ken talk about their future, Ken's approaching move to Missouri, his possible first meeting with Rod and Kristy, and what Gypsy wants her life to look like after her release. Gypsy tells Ken she isn't sure she even wants to return to Louisiana when she gets out. She says she doesn't want to go somewhere simply because that's what other people expect of her. Instead, she wants to “start fresh and live my life in peace” away from everything associated with her past. She even reveals that she has considered legally changing her first name, possibly dropping “Gypsy” and simply going by Rose. Ken tells her that, to him, she'll always be Gypsy Rose. The conversation turns heavily toward Gypsy's growing frustration with the attention surrounding her case. She says she doesn't want to be treated like a celebrity and tells Ken, “I wanna be a nobody.” She describes herself as simply another woman wearing khakis and doing her time, and says the attention has become embarrassing rather than exciting. Ken also tells Gypsy that he'd learned about the upcoming Hulu series The Act. Gypsy explains her previous dealings with Michelle Dean and says that she, Kristy and Rod eventually decided to cut ties with her. Gypsy says she thought the project would stop without their participation, but realized that wasn't what happened. That leads to a much bigger conversation about all of the documentaries, books and projects continuing to come out about Gypsy. Gypsy says every retelling forces her and her family to relive everything again. She describes herself as having gone through different “versions” of Gypsy and says she's now trying to create the “final version of myself,” someone healed from her past who isn't defined by it. They also discuss Gypsy's conversation with Rod earlier that day. Gypsy tells Ken that she suggested Rod finally meet him. Rod apparently floated the idea of meeting Ken outside the prison first, possibly over dinner or at a bar. Ken says he's nervous but absolutely willing to meet him and would like the opportunity to talk with Rod “man to man.” There are also lighter moments throughout the call, including their plans for future pets, where they might eventually live, Ken bringing McDonald's fries and popcorn shrimp for a food visit, and the strange coincidence of them sending one another cards containing the exact same quote. One thing I would consider editing: there is a lengthy section later in the call where Ken discusses his past drug use, rehab and arrest in detail. He says he was arrested on a warrant after missing a court date and describes the charges as driving on a suspended license and failure to appear. Depending on how much of the full call you're keeping, that could either be a major separate hook or something to shorten because it takes the conversation pretty far away from Gypsy. #GypsyRoseBlanchard #GypsyRose #KenUrker #DeeDeeBlanchard #RodBlanchard #KristyBlanchard #TheAct #MichelleDean #PrisonCalls #PrisonPhoneCalls #GypsyRosePrisonCalls #TrueCrime #TrueCrimeCommunity #FOIA #TheBlanchardFiles
