2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

In this May 22, 2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard prison phone call, Gypsy talks with Kristy Blanchard about an upcoming visit with Rod, Michelle Dean's project, additional television projects, Francesca/Fancy and the emotional toll the continuing media attention is taking on her. The call begins on a happy note when Kristy reveals that she and Rod have officially scheduled their trip to visit Gypsy during the first weekend of June. Gypsy is thrilled and immediately begins working out the visitation arrangements. Then the conversation turns back to Michelle Dean. Kristy says they are going to try to stop the project because, according to her, they never gave Michelle permission. Gypsy says she was extremely upset when she learned it was moving forward. Gypsy explains that hearing about multiple media projects at once caused her to have what she describes as a “whole freaking nervous breakdown.” She tells Kristy: “I’m tired of the spotlight.” And: “I just wanna, like, fade into the background.” Part of her concern is very practical. Gypsy says women inside the prison already give her a hard time about her notoriety, and every new television program gives them something else to see and discuss. Kristy discusses Francesca/Fancy's project and says she believes it will tell a much more detailed version of the story. She also discusses interest from the REELZ channel, but says she does not intend to participate in anything REELZ might produce. Gypsy responds: “I feel like I’ve told enough and spoken out enough. I’m done.” The timing makes the situation even more difficult for Gypsy. Kristy points out that the anniversary is approaching, causing news and old coverage to begin resurfacing again. The call also includes an interesting conversation about supporters. Kristy tells Gypsy that a supporter in Australia had even offered to provide her somewhere peaceful to stay after her release. Kristy rejects the idea, saying Gypsy is coming home to her family. Later, the conversation becomes much lighter. They talk about Kristy's dog Aurora having a rough trip to the veterinarian, Gypsy's prison photography job, school testing, and Ken being nervous about showing Gypsy affection in front of Rod during their upcoming visit. Gypsy jokingly tells Kristy to tell Ken that he can kiss her in front of her dad. #GypsyRoseBlanchard #GypsyRose #KristyBlanchard #DeeDeeBlanchard #TheAct #MichelleDean #KenUrker #RodBlanchard #GypsyRosePrisonCalls #PrisonPhoneCalls #PrisonCalls #TrueCrime #TrueCrimeCommunity #FOIA #TheBlanchardFiles
