2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

On June 28, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ken Urker have a lengthy conversation that covers everything from an obsessive letter and their future together to a surprisingly uncomfortable discussion about what would happen if their relationship ever ended. The call begins with Gypsy talking about her workout and telling Ken about recent drama surrounding visitation. But later, Gypsy brings up the strange letter she recently received from a man named Brandon. This time, she actually reads portions of it to Ken. According to the letter Gypsy reads, Brandon tells her that his heart is set on waiting for her, that he wants a chance with her and that he will do anything to be with her. Then comes the line that gets both of their attention: “To be honest, I’m obsessed with you.” Gypsy tells Ken she considers the letter one of the creepiest she's ever received and jokes that if anything ever happens to her, someone should look into the person who sent it. Ken becomes curious enough that he begins searching for the man while they're still talking. Based on the information Ken finds during the call, some of the details appear different from what Gypsy says the man previously told her. That only makes the situation seem stranger to both of them. The conversation eventually shifts to Gypsy's relationship with Ken. Gypsy explains that she doesn't want her relationship broadcast nationwide when 20/20 gives viewers an update about her life. She says enough people already know through Facebook and that she wants to keep that part of her life private. That leads Ken and Gypsy into another conversation about their future. They discuss eventually living around Austin, finding a cozy place outside the city and having their families nearby. Gypsy worries that Ken is putting parts of his life on hold while waiting for her. Ken strongly disagrees. He tells Gypsy: “Don’t ever say you’re holding me back. You push me forward.” Ken reassures her that he hasn't developed doubts about their relationship and says being with her makes him happier. They also discuss their upcoming anniversary and trying to plan another extended visitation weekend. But later, the conversation takes a bizarre turn. After joking about what they would do if one of them stopped answering the other's calls, Gypsy suddenly becomes serious. She tells Ken that there is something she believes she should have told him when they first started dating. If they ever break up, Gypsy says she won't talk badly about him, she'll still care about him and: “I’m not gonna harm you in any way.” Ken is completely thrown off by the statement. He asks why she would think she needed to reassure him of that and points out that he had never been worried about Gypsy coming after him if their relationship ended. Ken essentially tells her that hearing the reassurance makes the situation sound more concerning than if she had never mentioned it at all. Gypsy explains that because they joke about her being “crazy,” she wanted Ken to understand that she would never actually hurt him. Ken then tells Gypsy that he has never viewed her as dangerous and says people who make that assumption don't know the person he knows. When they seriously discuss what a breakup would actually look like, Ken admits that he probably couldn't immediately remain close friends with Gypsy because he would need space to separate himself emotionally. But neither one believes they're going anywhere. Ken says: “Well, I’m not doing it either.” And they jokingly conclude: “I guess we’re just forever then.” The lengthy conversation continues into discussions about their relationship, attraction, intimacy and the challenges of maintaining a committed relationship while physically separated.
