2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “I PROMISE I'LL BE THERE BY JUNE” | Ken Postpones His Move AGAIN | 04/26/2018

This April 26, 2018 call picks up directly after the tension we heard between Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ken Urker the night before. Gypsy calls Ken just to tell him that she loves him, but immediately admits that she spent the entire night thinking about their previous conversation. “I stayed up all night crying.” Gypsy says she wrote Ken a huge letter explaining what has been happening in her life and why she acted the way she did. Most importantly, she acknowledges that she had been putting pressure on Ken to move to Missouri because she misses him. She tells him she understands that moving is expensive and that he should take as much time as he needs. Then Gypsy directly addresses the “other guys” jokes from the 04/25 call. “There is no other dudes.” She says repeatedly joking about other men needs to stop, calls it immature and acknowledges that she hadn't considered how it might make Ken feel. “You're my only one, and I don't want you to feel like you're not.” Ken admits that when she first started talking about another guy, he actually thought she might be serious. But he also apologizes for his own behavior during the previous call. Gypsy says it hurt her knowing that she had hurt Ken's feelings. Then she makes a pretty revealing statement about their relationship: “This is my first real relationship, so if I fuck up sometimes, I'm sorry. I'm learning, okay?” Ken reassures her that she's the only woman he wants to be with and that he is still coming to Missouri. Gypsy again explains that she desperately wants him there, but she doesn't want to pressure him. She admits she doesn't really understand what moving costs because: “I have not been out in the real world.” She says all she can do is support his decision and wait for him. And then Ken postpones the move again This is especially interesting after the 04/25 call, when Gypsy complained: “Every month it's next month.” Ken tells her that he had originally planned to come that week regarding the new job, and there had been a possibility of coming the following Friday. Now: “It's not gonna happen.” But Ken gives Gypsy a new promise: “I will promise you that I'll be there by June. Like, that's a promise. Like, I won't postpone it again.” He says June is important to both of them and he wants to be there with her during that month. Gypsy then says she did some “soul searching” after their previous conversation and realized she needed to mature. Ken repeatedly reassures her not to beat herself up. Interestingly, both of them contacted Kristy after the 04/25 call. Ken says that about an hour after they hung up, he texted Gypsy's mom and asked her to tell Gypsy how he felt. They end the short call saying they love each other, and Ken asks Gypsy to call him again the following day. #gypsyrose #gypsyroseprisoncalls #gypsyroseblanchardcase #kenurker #truecrime
