2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “I KNEW ONE DAY YOU WERE GONNA WATCH IT” | Kristy Reveals Why She Held Back About Dee Dee

On July 5, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard calls Kristy Blanchard for a lengthy conversation covering everything from Ken's recent visit and Sophia contacting Gypsy again to Dee Dee Blanchard, Nick Godejohn and the upcoming trial. Early in the call, Gypsy tells Kristy about an embarrassing incident that happened during the final day of Ken's recent visit. Gypsy says she unexpectedly bled through her clothing and onto the chair while sitting with Ken. She didn't want Ken to see what had happened, so when the visit ended, she hurried him toward the door and quietly asked a staff member for help. Ken apparently thought something much more serious had happened. Because of their previous problems during visitation, Gypsy says Ken worried that staff had pulled her aside because they'd gotten caught breaking the rules again. Gypsy eventually called Ken and explained what actually happened. Later, Gypsy tells Kristy that Sophia contacted her again. According to Gypsy, Sophia apologized for having been “obsessed” and asked Gypsy to rekindle their friendship. Kristy isn't surprised. That leads into a much larger discussion about people they have removed from their lives and social-media groups. Kristy says life has become much more peaceful since she stopped worrying about what certain people were saying online. The conversation then turns to Nick Godejohn and his family. Kristy says she doesn't believe publicly attacking Nick accomplishes anything and explains that although she may privately complain about him, she doesn't want to put those thoughts on social media for the entire world to see. That leads Kristy to explain how she approached talking about Dee Dee Blanchard publicly. Kristy tells Gypsy that when they filmed the documentary, she could have said considerably more about how she felt about Dee Dee. But she deliberately didn't. Why? Because Kristy knew Gypsy would eventually see it. “I knew one day, when you were up to it, you were gonna watch it.” Kristy says she wanted to remain respectful because she understood that regardless of her own feelings, Dee Dee was still Gypsy's mother. Kristy acknowledges that she called Dee Dee a liar, but says there were harsher things she could have said and intentionally chose not to. She explains that she had already been honest with Gypsy privately about how she felt and didn't need those feelings permanently broadcast to the world. Kristy then talks about how her relationship with Gypsy developed. She recalls Gypsy once admitting: “I didn’t like you at the beginning.” Rather than becoming upset, Kristy says she understood why Gypsy felt that way. According to Kristy, they essentially started over and rebuilt their relationship through “baby steps.” Kristy even remembers telling Gypsy early in their relationship that if she ever wanted to call her “Mom,” she could. Kristy explains that she wanted Gypsy to understand how much she loved her because she had always felt Gypsy was alone. The conversation eventually returns to Nick's case. Gypsy and Kristy discuss the upcoming November trial, possible jury selection and the difficulty of finding jurors unfamiliar with such a widely publicized case. They also discuss the possibility that the 20/20 program will air again before Nick's trial. Despite everything that happened, Gypsy says: “I’m just hoping that he gets the help he needs.” Kristy agrees. The call ends on a much more ordinary note, with Gypsy realizing she may have lost her place in the microwave line before telling Kristy she can apply for the incentive wing again the following month.
