2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “I MISS YOU SO MUCH IT MAKES ME ANGRY!” | Gypsy Reassures Ken | 07/07/2018

On July 7, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ken Urker speak in two short recorded conversations while Gypsy is incarcerated at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. Gypsy is nervous about her upcoming afternoon shift working visitation, but she's also excited because she finally received an email from Ken. The two discuss using email more frequently instead of relying entirely on handwritten letters. Ken reveals that he's previously spent around $23 to overnight correspondence to Gypsy. Gypsy then tells Ken she's been talking about him nonstop. But the most revealing part of the conversation comes when she discusses a letter she recently wrote him. Gypsy explains that she misses Ken so much that the distance and limitations of incarceration sometimes make her feel angry and frustrated. She wants to make sure Ken understands that those feelings aren't his fault. She reassures him that he's doing nothing wrong and that she considers him the best partner she could ask for. The couple exchanges affectionate words before ending the conversation, with plans to speak again the following day. What's especially interesting is hearing Gypsy's affectionate reassurances to Ken alongside her separate July 6, 2018 conversation with Bryan Golden, in which she discussed loneliness, her fear of cheating, and a possible visit Ken didn't know about. What do you think about the contrast between these conversations?
