2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “I WAS SO WORRIED” | Gypsy Finds Out TORNADOES Hit Near Her Family | 04/23/2018

In this April 23, 2018 prison call, Gypsy Rose Blanchard calls Kristy after becoming frightened when she learned tornadoes had touched down near her family in Louisiana. Gypsy explains that her roommate told her the storms were all over the news. She tried calling home but couldn't get an answer: “That freaked me out... and I called again and still no answer. That freaked me out even more.” Gypsy had eventually called Mia the previous day to make sure everyone was okay. She tells Kristy that she was especially concerned because one of the tornadoes passed not far from Mia. Gypsy also talks about how strange it feels to hear about tornadoes in Louisiana, saying she didn't experience tornado warnings or drills until she got to Missouri. Kristy tells Gypsy that two tornadoes hit the next town over, but their family was okay. Ken had also contacted Kristy after seeing pictures she posted on Facebook and told her he was thankful nobody had been hurt. Kristy then gives Gypsy a much more detailed account of the storm. She says a tornado hit a Sonic and describes footage showing a car being lifted into the air and landing in a field. She says everything happened within seconds. The conversation leads Kristy to remember another terrifying tornado from years earlier. She tells Gypsy about severe damage near their home and recounts a tragic story involving a relative's boyfriend who she says died while saving two children. Gypsy repeatedly comes back to the most important thing for her: “I'm just happy that y'all OK.” Toward the end, the conversation shifts to Rod. Gypsy says she finally looked at a map at school and realized just how far away he was working. Kristy explains that Rod would eventually be flying home rather than returning with the boat. They also discuss his frequent-flyer miles and how Kristy and Rod had previously used miles for their honeymoon. Before hanging up, Gypsy asks Kristy to tell Ken that she loves him and says she'll call him Wednesday because she has “a bunch of stuff to talk to him about.” #GypsyRoseBlanchard #KristyBlanchard #PrisonCalls #TrueCrime #TheBlanchardFiles
