2018 Gypsy Rose Blanchard: The Prison Calls

This playlist documents an entire year of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's prison phone calls from 2018, organized chronologically so you can follow the conversations and events as they unfolded in real time. Throughout the year, you'll hear Gypsy's conversations with Kristy and Rod Blanchard, Ken Urker, family members, friends, supporters, and others in her life while she was incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. These calls cover everything from ordinary day-to-day prison life and family updates to relationships, money, media coverage, documentaries, her criminal case, Dee Dee Blanchard, Nicholas Godejohn, future plans, and the public attention surrounding her story. Some calls are uneventful. Others contain details that become much more significant when viewed alongside later interviews, documentaries, public statements, and other records. Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

Currently Playing: “I HAD TO TELL MYSELF HOW MUCH OF A PIECE OF CRAP I AM” DeeDee & Accountability 06/17/2018

In this June 17, 2018 conversation, Gypsy Rose Blanchard speaks with Marsha Smith, whom Gypsy affectionately calls “Nana,” about unexpectedly reconnecting with someone from her childhood, her relationship with Dee Dee, accountability for her crime, and what she hopes to do with her life after release. Gypsy begins by telling Marsha that she unexpectedly encountered Kathy Dunn, someone they both knew years earlier. Gypsy says Kathy still had childhood photographs Dee Dee had sent her, including pictures from Gypsy's Make-A-Wish trip and visits with Santa. The conversation eventually turns to Gypsy's ICVC class and an emotional assignment involving Dee Dee. Gypsy explains that she had to write a letter from Dee Dee to herself, but the assignment wasn't supposed to be a comforting letter. Instead, she says she essentially had to imagine Dee Dee confronting her over what she had done. Gypsy tells Marsha: “I had to sort of tell myself how much of a piece of crap I am.” She says she would rather believe she has made peace with Dee Dee and that Dee Dee is in heaven, while also trying to forgive both her mother and herself. Gypsy says the class is about “soul searching” and “taking accountability.” She also makes an interesting statement about beginning to recognize situations where she viewed herself as the victim while potentially creating victims herself. She describes another assignment from the homicide chapter in which participants had to plan a loved one's funeral, including choosing music and calculating funeral and headstone costs. Gypsy explains that the point was to understand what their actions forced other people to experience. Marsha offers her own perspective, telling Gypsy that she believes Gypsy felt she had no other way out at the time. Gypsy, meanwhile, talks about wanting to use her experiences to help other people rather than making her future entirely about herself. They also discuss Gypsy's eventual release. Gypsy says she doesn't want everyone knowing immediately when she's coming home. Instead, she wants privacy and time to adjust to life outside before potentially having a homecoming party about a month later with close family and friends.
