Rather than focusing only on selected clips, this series is intended to preserve the larger context of the 2018 calls and allow viewers to hear how conversations, relationships, and stories developed throughout the year. The calls are presented chronologically, beginning in January 2018 and continuing through December 2018. Prison call recordings were obtained through a public-records request from the Missouri Department of Corrections and are being shared for commentary, documentation, research, and educational purposes.

On July 11, 2018, Gypsy Rose Blanchard calls Ken Urker after an exhausting day at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. Gypsy explains that she's been extremely busy taking photographs of incarcerated women, including treatment pictures, general population pictures, and photographs for the incentive wing. But her stressful day actually began the night before. Gypsy says correctional officers woke her up for an unexpected urine drug test just 45 minutes after she'd used the bathroom. Unable to provide a sample immediately, she drank several containers of water and stayed awake until approximately 2:30 a.m., despite having an early morning count. She tells Ken she's exhausted and simply needed to hear his voice. Then Ken reveals he's also had a difficult day. Ken explains that managers at his bartending job called him into a meeting after he forgot to lock the bar's front door at closing time. But the unlocked door wasn't the only problem. According to Ken, management reviewed the surveillance footage to determine what had distracted him. That's when they discovered he had been giving his friends free alcoholic drinks. Ken admits that he regularly gives away drinks, claiming it's common practice among bartenders. His managers also questioned why it took him an hour to close the bar when business had been slow. Ken describes being confronted by three managers who questioned whether they could trust him to work alone. Although he acknowledges that leaving the door unlocked was a serious mistake, he defends the free drinks as a normal part of the industry. Ultimately, Ken says he wasn't fired. Instead, management issued his first written warning. He tells Gypsy that his managers appreciated his willingness to accept responsibility and acknowledged his previous good work. After discussing their stressful days, the couple turns to something more lighthearted. Gypsy tells Ken she's been taking photographs with Jelly and Courtney, describing their coordinated makeup, outfits, and poses. She explains that she plans to send Ken copies, including a photograph featuring herself and Courtney in front of a Statue of Liberty backdrop. The conversation ends with Gypsy and Ken expressing their love and encouraging one another. This July 11 recording offers another glimpse into Ken's employment troubles, Gypsy's daily prison routine, and the couple's relationship during the summer of 2018. What's particularly interesting is that Ken's workplace problems come just days after his July 5 conversation about sneaking alcohol into a Fourth of July celebration and running from security. What do you think about Ken's explanation for giving away free drinks?
