My social isolation never ended. Everybody else went back to normal after all of it and I just never did. I'm still in it. I think a lot of people are. We got told to stay apart for so long that it stopped being a rule and started being a way of living. And honestly part of me liked it. The quiet. Nobody expecting anything. I didn't have to pretend. But then it just never switched off. Everyone came back out and I stayed shut in. I still say hi to people in passing but it's like we never dropped the distance. We're all still six feet apart in our heads. The thing nobody tells you about being alone too long is it gets comfortable. It gets familiar. And then everything outside of it starts to feel foreign. Reaching out to people feels like work now. Like a muscle I stopped using. I know I'm not built to live like this. None of us really are. We're social creatures whether we like it or not. But knowing that and actually breaking out of it are two different things. I don't have it figured out. I'm just saying it out loud because I don't think I'm the only one still stuck in here.
