The older I get, the more I see through people. Not in a way I'm proud of. I just notice things now I never used to catch. The performance in a conversation. The line someone's said a hundred times before to a hundred other people. I see it and I can't unsee it. It's made me quieter around people, if I'm honest. Not because I think I'm better than anyone. I do plenty of the same performing myself, I just notice it more when I'm the one doing it too. That's the part that actually bothers me. It's not just them. It's all of us, doing this dance. I used to take people at face value. Now there's this second layer running the whole time, reading what's underneath what's being said. I don't know if that's wisdom or just wear.
