I quit drinking years ago and I lost my whole social life doing it. Nobody warns you about that part. I feel better than I have in my life. Clear-headed, level, not run by it anymore. I wouldn't go back. But the invites stopped, and that's when I figured out most of those friendships were built on the drinking, not on me. Turns out almost everything is built around it. The barbecues, the weddings, catching up after work. Take the drink away and there's not much left, and being the sober guy in the room makes people weird even when you don't say a word. So I'm healthier and more alone than I've ever been. Still don't fully know if it was worth the trade. Most days I think it was.
