Every conversation I have is fake. I was around people for ten hours yesterday, drove home, and couldn't remember one thing anybody said. Not one. That's not a bad memory. There was nothing in it to remember. It's the same conversation every single day. Same jokes, same lines, same nothing. I could sit here tonight and write out tomorrow's conversations word for word and I'd be close. And there's always a bit of a bite to it. Always a little bit negative. Then there's the guys who only talk to get angrier. They're not bringing up a problem to get it off their chest. They're feeding something. And they want you to jump in so you can both get worked up together. I'm done with that. It costs you the whole day. But here's the part I don't like admitting. I'm not innocent in this. I give the same nod. The same joke. The same "cold out today." I'm on the other end of a fake conversation as often as I'm on the receiving end of one. I don't actually think people are fake. I think we've got nowhere safe to be honest. Nobody at work is going to tell you how they really are if you ask. So we all just talk to fill the time, and we all go home alone anyway.
