I don't relate to anyone I work with. For years I thought I did. Then I quit drinking, and found out I didn't. We used to drink together after work and I called that friendship. Turns out that was the drinking doing the work, not the connection. I showed up sober one day and there was nothing left standing underneath it. We never really had that much in common. I just couldn't tell while I was drinking with them. Then there's the jokes. Some of them are just jokes, low stakes, that's fine, I get it. But some of it is just cruel, and doing that every single day starts to shape who you are. I don't want to be that guy anymore, so I stopped laughing along. And people notice when you stop. That's the part nobody warns you about. If you don't feed into what people want from you, they take it personally. There was no big blowout. Just a slow drift into being the odd one on site. And I could fix it tomorrow. Go back to laughing along, get a beer after work, and the isolation would probably be gone by Friday. But it means going back to being someone I worked hard to stop being. So I stay on the outside instead. Construction pulls a certain kind of person. Always has. I used to click with it the same way they do. I just don't anymore. Do you think it's them, or is it you that changed? Subscribe if this hit home.
