On the 198th day, I visited Jerash, where there are ruins of a Roman city in relatively good condition. Jerash is comparable to Pompeii, which was buried under the ash of Vesuvius. From Amman, I took a bus to Jerash for 0.65 dinars from the northern bus terminal of Amman. We covered 50 kilometers in 1 hour. I arrived at the Arch of Hadrian, a giant gate built to welcome the visit of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in 130 AD. The arrival of Hadrian gave a new spirit to build the city of Jerash. A Hippodrome, a place for chariot racing, was built next to the Arch of Hadrian. Hadrian's Arch was to be the new southern gate of the city, which did not happen. Hadrian's Arch became a single monument without walls. The hippodrome was always outside the city walls of Jerash. Shortly after, the hippodrome fell into decline. It was abandoned. Even one of its rooms was turned into a house for deacons who served in the Byzantine Church built across the hippodrome. I continued walking along the Jerash-Philadelphia (Amman) road and arrived at the Temple of Zeus. It was still outside the city. From the top of the temple, I could see the Oval Plaza, which is uniquely shaped to facilitate the meeting of the Cardo, the main street in Jerash, with the road to Philadelphia. Walking along the Cardo, with Roman buildings on both sides, I arrived at the Nymphaeum, a city fountain that was a must-have in every Roman city. From there, I turned west to see the Temple of Artemis, the guardian goddess of Jerash. Unfortunately, this temple was unfinished due to the decline of Jerash, which was completely abandoned after a terrible earthquake in 749 AD. After exploring the Roman ruins, I returned to the bus shelter and caught the 5 p.m. bus to Amman. It seemed to be the last bus. Tomorrow, I will venture west of Amman, towards Mount Nebo, from where Moses saw the Holy Land. ___ Stage 1 Route - Sumatra (DONE!): Jakarta - Bandar Lampung - Baturaja - Lahat - Pagar Alam - Bengkulu - Lebong Tandai - Kerinci - Jambi - Kuala Tungkal - Batam - Johor Bahru Stage 2 Route - ASEAN Mainland (DONE!): Johor Bahru - Kuala Tahan - Kota Bharu - Su-Ngai Kolok - Nakhon Si Thammarat - Chaiya - Nakhon Pathom - Bangkok - Nakhon Ratchasima - Phimai - Nong Khai - Vientiane - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang - Chiang Rai - Chiang Mai - Pai - Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai - Boten - Kunming, China Stage 3 Route - China (DONE!): Kunming - Dali - Lijiang - Shangri-La - Shambala - Litang - Chengdu - Leshan - Chengdu - Xi'an - Zhangye - Jiayuguan - Dunhuang - Turpan - Urumqi - Almaty, Kazakhstan Stage 4 Route - Central Asia (DONE!): Almaty - Shymkent - Tashkent - Nukus - Muynak - Turtkul - Khiva - Bukhara - Samarkand - Tashkent - Khujand - Fann Mountains - Dushanbe - Kunduz, Afghanistan Stage 5 Route - Afghanistan (DONE!): Kunduz - Samangan - Mazar-i-Sharif - Balkh - Kabul - Bamiyan - Band-e Amir - Yakawlang - Lal - Chagcharan - Herat - Mashhad, Iran Stage 6 Route - Iran (DONE): Mashhad - Tehran - Isfahan - Persepolis - Shiraz - Ahvaz - Shalamcheh Border - Shushtar - Shush - Bandar Abbas - Sharjah, UAE Stage 7 Route (DONE) - Arabian Peninsula: Sharjah - Dubai - Abu Dhabi - Riyadh - Jeddah - Madinah - AlUla - Hegra - Tabuk - Haql - Aqaba, Jordan Stage 8 Route - Jordan and Egypt: Aqaba - Wadi Rum - Petra - Amman - Jerash - Mount Nebo - Madaba - Dead Sea - Nuweiba - Giza - Cairo - Saqqara *Follow my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/obeysianipar/) for direct messages **Message me for sponsorship --- Music Credits: And Awaken - Stings by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. --- Chapters: 00:00 Prologue 02:10 Jerash and the Arch of Hadrian 05:09 The Hippodrome and the Byzantine Church 09:04 Entering Gerasa from the South Gate 12:06 Oval Plaza and the Temple of Zeus 15:29 The South Theater of Jerash 17:15 The Cardo and the South Tetrapylon 20:15 The Nymphaeum and the Cathedral 24:02 The Temple of Artemis 23:51 Umayyad Palace
