On the 106th day I finally explored the history of Tashkent after the previous week being busy planning a detour to Iran. I started my search by visiting the Amir Timur Museum which is in the center of Tashkent. It contains more paintings and replicas than unique and original ancient exhibits. But at least I learned what the Uzbek government considers important. As former Uzbek President Islam Karimov said, "If we want to know Uzbekistan, we just need to look at Timur". From the museum I continued on the Tashkent Metro which is famous for its architecture and interior design. I got off at Tinchlik and walked towards Chigatay Cemetery where there are tombs from the Soviet Union era that combines the style of Soviet Communist graves with Islamic style. I continued into Tashkent Mahalla, an old residential area, towards the Hazrat Imam Complex. Here there is the largest modern mosque in Uzbekistan with a separate library building which houses the Al-Quran of Uthman (651 AD). It was interesting to see the legendary manuscript in person that Timur reportedly brought from Iraq to Samarkand. In the complex which seeks to become the center of spirituality in Uzbekistan there are also the Tillya Sheikh Mosque, Madrassa Barakhan, Abu Bakar al-Shashi Tomb, Imam Al Bukhari Institute and currently the Center for Islamic Civilization is being constructed. I continued walking to Chorsu Bazaar, the largest old traditional market in Tashkent which sells various kinds of foodstuffs. To the south of the market is Kukeldash Madrasah which used to be right in the registran (sandy area) of Tashkent which was said to be the place of execution for unfaithful wives. Tomorrow I plan to leave Tashkent for Nukus.
