On the 170th day I went to Shushtar by a shared-taxi from Ahvaz East Terminal. The journey to the ancient capital of Khuzestan took about 1 hour. Upon my arrival at Shushtar, I checked-in at the Sarabi Traditional Hotel to store my backpack and immediately walked to the Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System which can be reached in 10 minutes on foot. To get the best view, visitors can enter the Marashi Historical House and see this UNECO World Heritage Site from a higher vantage point. According to history, this very sophisticated hydraulic system was built by Roman military engineers who were captured when they were defeated in 260 AD by the Persians. Allegedly, the Sasanid Persian King Shapur captured Emperor Valerian and promised to release him after Roman prisoners built this hydraulic system. A hydraulic system was built to aid irrigation in the Shushtar area and powered the site's many waterwheels. To regulate the strong flow of water, the Gargar Dam-Bridge was built which is still functioning to this day. The Gargar River or canal flows through the canyon dug by the Roman captives. At the upper reaches of the Gargar River there is the Mizan Dam-Bridge which regulates the water entering from the Karun River. I followed the banks of the Karun River and discovered many underground water tunnels that run beneath Salasel Castle, where the officials used to coordinate the irrigation system. Apart from the ruins of the fortress, there are also many underground chambers. It is said that the watter tunnel network runs beneath the city of Shushtar and reach the edge of the city. I continued walking along the Karun River until I reached the ruins of the Valerian Bridge, which is claimed to be the easternmost Roman structure in the world. From here, the Roman construction technology spread throughout Persia.
