On the 143rd day I finally had time to tour Kabul in the morning before leaving for Bamyan. From the hotel I only had to walk 200 meters to reach Kabul Military Fort, a defensive fortress located on one of the hills in Kabul. Previously, this fort was used as a military base, but now it is abandoned with several tank wrecks. From the top of the fort, I could see views of Kabul with housing perched on hillsides. I continued down the main road and tried to take a local bus for 10 Afghanis or around $0.15. I arrived in the center of Kabul, precisely in the old city which is on the edge of the Kabul river. The Shah-do Shamsira Mosque adorns the riverbank. Built during the reign of Amanullah Khan (1919-1929), this mosque is unique because it incorporates Italian style, so that some people call this architectural style Afghan Baroque. Next to the mosque is the tomb of Chin Timur Khan, the great general who helped Babur conquer India.
