On the 159th day I returned to walking with my brother around Isfahan, the capital of Safavid Persia, after separating from him in China 2.5 months earlier. I took the cheaper Silk Road, while he went through Tibet, the Himalayas and South Asia until we finally met again in Iran. This morning we walked to Naqsh-e Jahan, the largest square in the world when it was built in 1598 by Abbas the Great, the Safavid king who moved the Persian capital to Isfahan. The construction was magnificent and united the king's palace, grand mosque and royal market surrounding the square. It is said that this was done to strengthen the political foundations of the new capital which combined royal, religious and merchant elements. Currently, the building corridor surrounding the square still functions as a market selling Persian handicrafts. It is said that this complex is called Naqsh-e Jahan, which means "Image of the World" because previously the art sold and displayed here combined western and eastern styles. The area of the complex continues to grow with the addition of caravansarai which now also function as a handicraft center.
