On the 200th day, I walked around Madaba, a city which, according to the Bible and the Mesha Stele, is on the Moab border with Israel. Nowadays, Madaba is known as the City of Mosaic because of the Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics in this city. Historically, Arab Christians who relocated to Madaba in the late 19th century discovered the mosaics when building their houses. They preserved the mosaic because they were made aware of its significance. The most significant mosaic is in St. George's Church, which shows parts of the Middle East up to the Nile River. This giant mosaic is now called the Madaba Map and is a source for historians in mapping cities in ancient times. Even the city of Jerusalem is depicted with its main streets and churches so that archaeologists can find remains based on that map. Mosaics from other places in the Madaba Archaeological Museum depict towns around Madaba. In front of the ancient Roman street, you can find Umayyad-era mosaics on the floor of a former circular Roman temple. Beside it is a mosaic of the Tragedy of Hippolytus, a story from Greek Mythology. I continued walking to the Madaba Visitor Center, where I found a modern mosaic depicting Jordan with its cities and iconic attractions. Then I visited several more places, including the Apostle Church of Madaba, and continued to St. John the Baptist's Church, where there is an ancient labyrinth with the temple of John the Baptist underground. There were four bells perched on the church's tower. From the top, I could see the entire city of Madaba. I saw the King Hussein Mosque in the distance and went on to visit it. I read this mosque's original name was the Jesus Christ Mosque to promote tolerance between religious communities. After completing the walking tour, I returned to Amman, 30 km to the north.
