On the 216th day, I visited Saqqara, the necropolis of Memphis, the capital of Egypt in the Old Kingdom era around 4000-5000 years ago. It continued to be used as a cemetery until the Christian era. I came here to see the Pyramid of Djoser, the first pyramid of Egypt, built in the 27th century BC. Initially, this pyramid was a mastaba (block-shaped tomb) of King Djoser, which was then developed into a pyramid by Imhotep, the architect. He widened the pyramid and stacked smaller mastabas on top of larger ones until it formed six levels, shaped like a pyramid. It was the beginning of pyramid construction. Allegedly, Djoser's mastaba (and later pyramid) was the first giant stone building in the world. Imhotep's expertise in developing the pyramid-building technique made him a famous architect. Later, the figure of Imhotep was deified. Currently, the museum in Saqqara is dedicated to Imhotep and holds evidence of architectural techniques and art. For example, it exhibits the world's first wooden statue of a human. From the museum, I entered many mastabas of Pharaohs' families and nobles. It was an experience. The caretaker allowed me into some of the locked tombs for a small fee. Inside, I could see various relief paintings, from mummification rituals to everyday life, such as the activities of poultry meat sellers. In contrast to the inside of the pyramids, which have no paintings, the tombs of the nobility have rooms full of paintings. Some tombs also have statues, probably of the owners. Lastly, I visited the Serapeum, a cemetery for Apis bulls from 3,500-2,000 years ago. Each bull was buried in a giant granite sarcophagus weighing more than 40 tonnes. On my way home, I looked south towards Dahshur, which showcases the next development of pyramid-building techniques in the form of the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. They were perfecting the pyramid-building technique there.
