On the 212th day, I went to Coptic Cairo, a Coptic district at the center of Cairo. It contains a caver church that allegedly was the place where Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus lived when they fled to Egypt. I crossed the Nile River from Giza and followed it towards the Citadel of Babylon, the name of the Roman fort that now protects Coptic Cairo. Once inside Coptic Cairo, I saw a map that showed the Holy Family's escape route when they were in Egypt. They found a drinking well near the Citadel of Babylon and decided to live in a nearby cave. I learned that the Coptic Christians believed this story. Allegedly, there is a first-century stone altar in this cave. St. Helena built this church at this place in the 4th century. It is called Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church after the names of two Roman centurions who were martyred during the Maximian Persecution at the end of the 3rd century AD. The structure of the building resembles the Church of Saint Barbara, which supposedly was built in the same century. Both churches are among the oldest churches in Cairo. They have many murals, paintings, and various heirlooms. Numerous relics from Saint Barbara Church have been moved to the nearby Coptic Museum. Lastly, I visited the Hanging Church that "hangs" above one of the gates of the Babylon Fortress. From the inside, it looks like an ordinary church, but some holes on the floor show that this church was built on supports tens of meters above the ground level. After almost 2000 years, the ground level has risen 6 meters so that from the outside, it doesn't look as majestic as when it was first built. This church is the most popular Coptic church in Cairo because, in its history, there have been many Marian apparitions. For several hundred years, this church was chosen to anoint Coptic patriarchs. After visiting Coptic Cairo, I returned to Giza. Tomorrow, I will explore the world-famous Pyramids of Giza. ___ Stage 1 Route - Sumatra (DONE!): Jakarta - Bandar Lampung - Baturaja - Lahat - Pagar Alam - Bengkulu - Lebong Tandai - Kerinci - Jambi - Kuala Tungkal - Batam - Johor Bahru Stage 2 Route - ASEAN Mainland (DONE!): Johor Bahru - Kuala Tahan - Kota Bharu - Su-Ngai Kolok - Nakhon Si Thammarat - Chaiya - Nakhon Pathom - Bangkok - Nakhon Ratchasima - Phimai - Nong Khai - Vientiane - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang - Chiang Rai - Chiang Mai - Pai - Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai - Boten - Kunming, China Stage 3 Route - China (DONE!): Kunming - Dali - Lijiang - Shangri-La - Shambala - Litang - Chengdu - Leshan - Chengdu - Xi'an - Zhangye - Jiayuguan - Dunhuang - Turpan - Urumqi - Almaty, Kazakhstan Stage 4 Route - Central Asia (DONE!): Almaty - Shymkent - Tashkent - Nukus - Muynak - Turtkul - Khiva - Bukhara - Samarkand - Tashkent - Khujand - Fann Mountains - Dushanbe - Kunduz, Afghanistan Stage 5 Route - Afghanistan (DONE!): Kunduz - Samangan - Mazar-i-Sharif - Balkh - Kabul - Bamiyan - Band-e Amir - Yakawlang - Lal - Chagcharan - Herat - Mashhad, Iran Stage 6 Route - Iran (DONE): Mashhad - Tehran - Isfahan - Persepolis - Shiraz - Ahvaz - Shalamcheh Border - Shushtar - Shush - Bandar Abbas - Sharjah, UAE Stage 7 Route - Arabian Peninsula (DONE): Sharjah - Dubai - Abu Dhabi - Riyadh - Jeddah - Madinah - AlUla - Hegra - Tabuk - Haql - Aqaba, Jordan Stage 8 Route - Jordan and Egypt: Aqaba - Wadi Rum - Petra - Amman - Jerash - Mount Nebo - Madaba - Dead Sea - Nuweiba - Giza - Cairo - Saqqara *Follow my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/obeysianipar/) for direct messages **Message me for sponsorship --- Music Credits: And Awaken - Stings by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. --- Chapters: 00:00 Prologue 01:53 River Nile 04:29 Coptic Cairo 06:23 Abu Serga 11:22 Church of St. Barbara 13:34 The Hanging Church
