On the 199th day, I made a pilgrimage to Mount Nebo, the mountain that the Prophet Moses climbed at the end of his life to see the Holy Land because he was not allowed to enter it. From Amman, I took a bus from near the Amman Museum to Madaba, a mosaic city located 9 kilometers east of Mount Nebo. On the bus, I chatted with several German students who took an exchange program in Madaba. A local conversed with me and offered to take me free of charge to Mount Nebo in his old car. There are no regular public buses from Madaba to Mount Nebo. Visitors need to take a taxi. So, I was lucky to get this ride. I was dropped off 1 kilometer before Mount Nebo because according to him, the asphalt road ahead had become a pilgrimage route. I continued walking "down" to Mount Nebo. The Jordan Valley and the mountains of Judah came into view. Mount Nebo is only 800 meters high above sea level, almost the same as Madaba. However, it looks high because the Jordan Valley near the Dead Sea is 400 meters below sea level. On Mount Nebo, there is a museum managed by the Catholic Franciscan order. The museum houses historical remains from Mount Nebo and the surrounding area. From the complex grounds, visitors can view the Jordan Valley with directions. The Dead Sea and Jericho are visible. Meanwhile, keen eyes are needed to see the Jerusalem skyline in the distance. On this mountain, there is now a modern church built on the remains of a Byzantine church from the 4th to 6th centuries. The remains of this 1500-year-old mosaic remain preserved on the museum floor. Finally, I climbed to the peak of the neighboring mountain, which had a better view of the Dead Sea. I pondered: Is this how Moses felt when God refused to allow him to enter the Promised Land?
