On the 184th day I left Riyadh to go to Jeddah which is almost 1000 kilometers away. My friend Sam dropped me at the bus terminal, where I took a bus for $60. The journey would take 12 hours through the Arabian Desert which is reddish in several places. It was November, when the change of season from summer to winter brought rain clouds over the desert which sometimes also caused sandstorms. I experienced rain in the desert, which perhaps for the inhabitants of the past was a blessing. I could see shrubs in several places in the desert that might thrive because of this rain. Towards evening, the bus approached Taif and turned north, circling the city of Mecca without entering it because only Muslims are allowed to enter this holy city. I arrived in Jeddah at 9 pm and immediately headed to the hotel.
