On the 110th day Rasul took me to Khiva, the ancient capital of Khwarezmia and also the Khiva Khanate. Many Muslim scholars came from Khiva because in the past there were many madrasas in this city. In contrast to many old cities in China which are completely a commercial area, in Itchan Kala (the old city of Khiva), most of the buildings are still occupied by local residents. Local children can be seen playing football in the old alley in Itchan Kala. Meanwhile, the central area is surrounded by historical buildings, monuments, and commercial activities. Most of the historic buildings date from the early 19th century and have been restored. The oldest and original building is the Mausoleum of Sayid Allauddin which was built in the 14th century. Another old building is the Juma Mosque which was built in the 10th century and restored in the 18th century. The unique wooden pillars still follow the initial design of the mosque. While I was touring Itchan Kala, I found many ancient madrasas, but most of these madrasa buildings had been converted into shops, restaurants, and hotels. Interestingly, the building which almost 200 years ago was a hotel (caravansarai), is currently empty and not yet utilized. Apart from the madrassas and tombs, the historical minarets are the main attraction of this old city. From the walls of the old city, I could see the minarets of Khiva towering behind the residential buildings. Tomorrow I plan to visit other historical tourist attractions around Turtkul.
