“Look at me when I’m talking to you.” Among certain Ogryn-heavy Imperial Guard formations, a peculiar commissarial tradition has developed. They call them Mamas. What matters is the method: Ogryns respond remarkably well to a commander who gives clear rules, remembers their names, protects her boys, keeps her promises and makes absolutely certain they know when they have done well. There is another tradition among the Mamas. They do not show their faces easily. If a Mama trusts you, perhaps one day you will see the person beneath the cap and black coat. Until then, business is conducted from the shadows. And if you have given Mama a reason to put you on ice, you probably will not be seeing her face then either. Meet Commissar Jess "MAMA" Brewer, a relatively young Mama stationed in Hive Los Asta on the industrial world of Corda IX. Los Asta has all the usual problems of a respectable Imperial hive city: corruption, gang warfare, shortages, bad officers, worse paperwork and an underhive where something unpleasant is always brewing. Lately, whispers of Chaos have been coming up from below. Jess has her own way of handling things. She serves the Emperor. She serves the Imperium. When the enemy comes, her Ogryns hit hard, hold the line and do their duty. But Jess also knows the habits of the brass. Too many officers look at an Ogryn and see cannon fodder: something enormous to send through the first door, throw into the worst fighting and replace when the job is finished. Mama disagrees. Her boys ain’t fodder, brother. She learned their names. She gave them simple orders. She treated them like family. In return, Mama discovered just how dangerous a group of utterly devoted Ogryns can become when somebody finally points them in the right direction. And when there really is an enemy of the Emperor standing in front of them? Mama only has to say two words. Boys. Deploy. “Mama’s Boys” is a threatening Southern swing / New Orleans blues villain song with speakeasy swagger, mature female contralto vocals, deep Ogryn bass refrains, upright bass, barrelhouse piano, muted trumpet and a snarling low trombone.
