Lord-Captain Silas Mercer has been putting off this particular inspection. Deep in the engineering decks are the Tech-Priests he has privately started calling the Red Rascals. They maintain the ship. They speak to the machine spirits. They keep everything organized. Allegedly. Lately, Mercer has begun to wonder whether they are making things more difficult than they need to be. Tools disappear while people are still using them. Keys are moved because their hooks are deemed unsafe. Vital equipment is protected from "unnecessary handling." And whenever he asks where something has gone, the answer is always reassuringly identical: Somewhere safe, my lord. This time Mercer has brought his aide along to record exactly what happens down there. Partly because he wants proof. Partly because, somewhere in the back of his mind, the Lord-Captain has begun asking a rather uncomfortable question: The Red Rascals are loyal to him... aren't they? Probably. "I Put It Somewhere Safe, My Lord" is a rowdy Adeptus Mechanicus rock drinking song about shipboard organization, engineers who know better than management, and the peculiar danger of storing something so carefully that nobody can ever find it again. It follows the same loose Mechanicus comedy-song tradition as: 'Twas the Tism, My Lord Exterminatus, My Lord He Has a System, My Lord In the Imperial Navy, a Lord-Captain may command a vessel operating on detached duty, while Adeptus Mechanicus personnel aboard Imperial warships tend the machinery, conduct repairs, and safeguard technological knowledge. Which means that, however much authority the Captain carries on his own ship, eventually he still has to go downstairs and ask the people who actually know how the machinery works. Unfortunately, this time he brought his aide with him.
