Pay What You Owe is a fast, dirty blues-rock song with sci-fi western atmosphere, hard-rock energy and the relentless attitude of the Leagues of Votann. Dorrik Blackledger has crossed half the sector looking for one human: Crispin Ledgerly-Smythe, self-proclaimed Free Captain, celebrated entrepreneur and habitual thief. Crispin stole a Kin shipment, sold the same ore twice, renamed his vessel, burned the records and fled far beyond Dorrik’s jurisdiction. He eventually settles on a remote desert world, surrounds himself with hired guns and convinces himself the matter has been forgotten. It has not. When Dorrik enters the local saloon, half the mercenaries quietly leave and the rest suddenly become fascinated by their drinks. Crispin blames his broker, his captain, the paperwork and possibly the entire sector. Unfortunately, his mark is still in the ledger. The music combines dirty blues rock, sci-fi western tension, distorted guitars, low baritone guitar, bent harmonica, growling brass and a deep gravelly vocal performance. It is built like an escalating confrontation: swagger, pursuit, accusation and one final demand. Pay what you owe.
