Ballad of Rylanor is a sorrowful and defiant Imperial Guard bagpipe drinking song inspired by one of the most powerful acts of loyalty in Warhammer 40,000 and the Horus Heresy. Rylanor, known as the Ancient of Rites and Rylanor the Unyielding, was a loyalist Contemptor Dreadnought of the Emperor’s Children. When Fulgrim and most of the Third Legion betrayed the Emperor, Rylanor remained true. He survived the massacre on Isstvan III and endured beneath the ruined world, waiting for the day his corrupted Primarch would return. When Fulgrim finally came expecting submission, Rylanor answered with rejection. He chose destruction rather than betrayal, using the surviving virus bomb as his final weapon. Fulgrim survived the blast, but Rylanor wounded the Daemon Primarch where regeneration could not save him: his pride. This moment is important because Rylanor represents loyalty without reward, redemption or hope of rescue. His brothers abandoned their oaths. He kept his. Even entombed within an ancient war machine and buried for an age, he refused to recognise the monster his father had become. The song presents his final stand as a mournful Imperial military drinking ballad: a beautiful male voice carried by cello, martial bagpipes, restrained percussion and answering soldiers. It begins as a solitary lament before growing into a defiant communal oath that Imperial Guardsmen, veterans and voidsmen might sing together over raised cups: The Ancient answered no.
