The Melta Sings is a Warhammer 40K inspired blues drinking song told entirely from the perspective of Gunner Ferik Jurgen — Commissar Ciaphas Cain’s loyal, practical, malodorous aide, driver, supplier of tanna and frequent solution to problems requiring a meltagun. Where Cain sees danger, disaster and another very good reason to leave, Jurgen mostly sees a job that needs doing. Drive the car. Carry the kit. Make the tea. Stay close when the psykers start looking ill. Use the melta when necessary. And somehow, once again, everyone gets home. This song continues the loose Ciaphas Cain character series after Hero of the Imperium and the Amberley Vail perspective piece, this time looking at Cain’s adventures through the eyes of the man standing immediately beside him. Musically, this one leans into a smoky blues pub song / drinking song: gravelly male vocals, saxophone, dry comic timing and a working-man rhythm, with one appropriately tragic detour when Jurgen encounters something considerably more confusing than Tyranids, daemons or gunfire — women asking what the Commissar “really meant.” Ciaphas Cain, Jurgen, Amberley Vail and their wonderfully absurd adventures come from the Ciaphas Cain series by Sandy Mitchell, published by Black Library.
