Brum Within is a dark Ogryn chain-gang blues and electronic industrial song inspired by Warhammer 40,000. After being carried from the battlefield, Brum was taken to the Patch House, where he met another wounded Ogryn named Boro. The two became friends, and Brum made a little helper scratch in the words he held highest in the massive ogryns shield. Big Within. When Brum wakes again, Boro is gone. His legs no longer work. He is lying inside an unfamiliar Mechanicus chamber, surrounded by cold instruments, clicking machinery and red-robed figures who no longer call him Brum. To them, he is now Subject 9. The Adeptus Mechanicus requires expendable bodies with exceptional size and physical strength to test a new form of mechanized battle armour. The project may eventually serve more valuable wounded personnel—perhaps even warriors unsuitable for full Dreadnought interment—but Brum does not understand any of that. He only understands that the metal enclosure is too small. The restraints tighten. The lid begins to close. Brum tries to explain that he cannot stay inside the box, but the Tech-Priest records only the responses of Subject 9. Musically, Brum Within combines deep Ogryn chain-gang blues, sparse work-song rhythm, medicae-room ambience and cold electronic machinery. It is a song about damaged usefulness, lost identity and the terror of confinement—not a heroic transformation.
