Alone Again is a slow Ogryn chain-gang blues work song about finally finding somewhere you belong — and discovering that sometimes belonging only lasts as long as the thing that brought everyone together. Marn has spent most of his life alone. Then, for a little while, that changes. He is placed among a group of Imperial Guardsmen who make room for him. They share their food. They learn his name. He learns theirs. They joke together, sleep beside one another, march together and fight together. Day after day, the same faces are waiting for him. For Marn, these are the best days of his life. For once, he isn't the big Ogryn standing outside the group. Marn got a place. They call him mate. They know him, and he knows them. When the guns begin talking, Marn carries his friends home. When the fighting stops for the night, they lie together on the same cold floor. Marn thinks this is what friendship is. Then the guns go quiet. Orders change. Transports arrive. The Guardsmen shake his hand, tell him it was good serving with him, and leave. Nobody is angry with Marn. Nobody betrayed him. They simply had somewhere else to go. Alone again. Marn eventually finds them again. They are genuinely happy to see him. They laugh together, remember the old battles, and finally share the two drinks they once promised each other. For one evening, Marn has his place again. Then another transport is called. His friends stand up, shake his hand, tell him it was good seeing him and leave once more. Alone again. Marn doesn't hate them for it. He hopes they are together somewhere, laughing and having a good time. He just thought they were friends. And friends don't leave. Or do they? Maybe that is simply how things are. Maybe it is the will of the EMPRAH. Beneath the Warhammer story, Alone Again is about something much more ordinary: how difficult it can be to find real connection, and how easily friendships built around work, school, a military unit, a hobby, a game or any other shared place can disappear when that shared place disappears. Someone can be part of almost every day of your life, and then one day become someone you never see again. That does not mean the friendship was false. It does not mean you should stop trying. There are people out there who will choose to stay even after the job ends, the class finishes, the campaign is over or life changes direction. But finding those people is not always easy. And knowing they may exist somewhere does not make becoming alone again hurt any less.
