Hold Fast, Little Heart is a story about a very small terrier in a very large hive city. He isn't a war hound. He isn't a weapon. To the children of his hab block, he's simply Little Heart — their stubborn little soldier in an oversized Guard helmet, following them through the streets because someone has to. And when something comes out of the dark, the children run. He stays. This song was inspired by the true story of George, a Jack Russell Terrier from Manaia, New Zealand. On 29 April 2007, George was walking with five neighbourhood children when two Pit Bull Terriers approached them from behind. The dogs were moving toward one of the youngest children. George turned, barked, and charged them, giving the children time to escape. George was severely injured protecting them and was later put to sleep because of his wounds. His bravery was remembered far beyond Manaia. George received a posthumous SPCA Medal for Bravery, and in 2009 he was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal for protecting the lives of five children. A bronze statue of George still commemorates what one very small dog chose to do. So beneath the hive city, the Imperial imagery and the fiction, this one is for George. Hold fast, little heart.
