Welcome back to the Kinlaig Farm Estate Timelapse. Today’s focus is livestock efficiency. To prepare high-quality fodder, we begin by generating additional working capital. A trip to the mason’s workshop allows us to load tiles and paving stones and deliver them for sale, strengthening short-term cash flow before investing in grass equipment. At the dealer, we carefully select a mower and tedder combination designed for single-tractor efficiency. The mower is mounted on the front hitch, while the tedder of matching width is installed on the rear hitch. This configuration allows mowing and spreading grass in one continuous pass. We begin with a grass field near the farm, producing hay through mowing and scattering. As demand for fodder increases, we purchase an additional field with ripe grass and repeat the process across multiple plots to secure sufficient hay volume. With hay ready, we shift to baling. The dealer offers a multifunctional baling machine capable of handling hay, straw, grass, chopped chaff, and wood chips. Its compatibility with front attachments makes it highly versatile. Alongside the machine, we purchase a front rake and a bale stacker. The new setup allows raking and baling in an efficient sequence, while a second tractor collects the finished bales and transports them to storage. Once hay production is secured, we move directly into silage preparation. Corn fields have reached optimal maturity, and the multifunctional machine proves valuable again. A corn header is installed on the front hitch, enabling mowing and direct baling of chaff. To wrap silage bales, a separate wrapper is attached to another tractor, while a third tractor collects and stacks the wrapped bales using a bale stacker. Fully wrapped silage bales are transported to a temporary storage site and unloaded for fermentation.
