This hope chest was in rough shape, and the original plan had to change fast. After stripping it down, I realized the stains in the wood were not going anywhere. A traditional stain was not going to hide them, and tan washing was not going to lighten the damage enough to make this piece look finished. So I pivoted. Instead of wiping the stain back like you normally would, I used a dark water-based stain almost like paint. I applied it evenly, left it on the surface, and let the deep color do the work. It covered the discoloration, evened everything out, and gave this hope chest a rich, dramatic finish. The original hardware was also in rough shape, so I cleaned it up, refreshed it with metallic gold paint, and sealed it with a clear coat.
