This set had been sitting in my inventory for about a year, just waiting for the right vision—and this was it. This is a full American of Martinsville bedroom set, a perfect example of vintage quality and craftsmanship that you just don’t see the same way today. Solid construction, clean lines, and a piece that was absolutely worth the time and effort to bring back to life. The goal was to take something that felt dated and transform it into a more modern, elevated look while still respecting the integrity of the piece. We landed on a deep charcoal painted body paired with a dark gray, warm brown stained top. That combination keeps it grounded in a traditional feel, but gives it a cleaner, more updated presence. All of the original hardware was kept exactly as is to preserve that natural patina. It adds just enough character and contrast without feeling overdone. For the process, I fully stripped the top down to raw wood, sanded it smooth, and prepped it for stain. The body was cleaned, sanded, and prepped for paint. Once everything was ready, I taped off the top and moved the piece into the spray tent for primer, paint, and topcoat. After that, it came back out for staining the top, followed by multiple layers of topcoat to build durability and depth. This is one of those transformations that really shows what’s possible when you start with a quality piece and take the time to do it right. If you’re trying to get results like this on your own pieces, my Beginner’s Guide to Furniture Refinishing is the best place to start.
